07/08/08: Honk! The Musical, presented by Dexter Community Players

Music by George Stiles
Book & Lyrics by Anthony Drewe

Dexter Community Players proudly announces the first show of our 27th season!

Honk! is a musical retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Ugly Duckling, mixed with a theme of pro-tolerance. With a book and score provided by British songwriting duo Stiles and Drewe, Honk! won the Olivier Award (the British version of the Tony Awards) for Best Musical in 2000, beating The Lion King and Mamma Mia.

The story, set in the countryside, features an ugly duckling (Spencer Michaud) who discovers his inner beauty, his tearful mother Ida (Jennifer Smith), a drake (Tim Bryant) who 'ducks' his fatherly responsibilities, a sly tomcat (Caleb Mackinder) who just wants to play with his food, a wisecracking bullfrog (Jason Smith), various barnyard fowl and other such barnyard creatures, together with a great many fowl puns.

This show is great fun, with a storyline, songs, and jokes that can be enjoyed by patrons of any age. Our cast is made up of local stage veterans as well as relative newcomers, and promises to be a fabulous and enjoyable show!

02/23/08: Audition Notice: The Crucible

Arthur Miller's modern classic is a profoundly disturbing vision of human nature, steeped in themes of paranoia and persecution, jealousy and revenge. Set amidst the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the play still speaks clearly to issues close to the heart of all human interactions today -- the desire to appear 'normal' to one's peers, the tendency to deny responsibility for one's own actions and their consequences, and to look outside oneself when tragedy befalls. The frightful ease with which concepts like 'honor' and 'truth' lose their meanings will serve as a reminder to us all to reject the status quo, and be brave enough to stand up for what each of us believes is right.

The Crucible has roles for 11 men (age 30's to 80's) and 11 women
(ages 10 yrs to 70's).

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Please do NOT
memorize audition materials.

Mass Meeting: Sunday, March 9 @ 7pm. Attendance not required to audition.

09/25/07: Urinetown

Urinetown the Musical, presented by Dexter Community Players
Music & Lyrics by Mark Hollmann
Book & Lyrics by Greg Kotis

Director: Jason Smith

What is Urinetown?

This is the question that haunts the downtrodden poor in a bleak dismal urban future where private bathrooms no longer exist, and the public pay toilets are controlled by a power-hungry corporate monopoly.

Gloomy and depressing you say? Try hilarious and entertaining! Urinetown (the Musical) is an enjoyable parody of some of musical theater’s finest works wrapped up in a seemingly implausible story.

Think the title is awful? So do the show’s narrators, as they guide you through the singing, dancing, love, rebellions, greed, and kidnappings, and introduce you to the compelling and amusing characters of the Dexter Community Players’ production of this uproarious Tony Award winning musical.

Director Jason Smith, who brought you DCP’s critically successful Sweeney Todd, returns with some of community theater’s finest, along with choreographer Stacey Smith. The cast includes Brendan Bachman as the heroic Bobby Strong, Thalia Schramm as the sweet Hope Cladwell, Edmond Reynolds as the diabolical Caldwell B. Cladwell, and Leo Babcock as the ever present Officer Lockstock. The comedic pairing of Jenn Smith and Jeff Steinhauer work to steal the show in what is sure to be the highlight of the fall season.
